Lyhytelokuva Bully Factory

10 min draama on ohjaaja Soile Mottisenkankaan kokoon kutsuman, kansainvälisen työryhmän teos, lopputyö maisterin ohjaajaopintoihin. Lyhytelokuva Bully Factory pohjautuu roolipelikirjailija ja pelisuunnittelija Ville Vuorelan omakohtaisiin kokemuksiin perustuvaan kirjaan Häirikkötehdas (Finnlectura, 2011).

Elokuva kertoo entiselle koululleen nyt opettajana palaavasta IT-osaajasta, joka joutuu kohtaamaan menneisyyden kauhukokemukset. Pelimaailman myyttisestä hahmosta kasvaa tosielämän sankari.

Short film Bully Factory

21st century high productive school system allows dark age way of bullying. The hero from game world turns out to a real life saver.

The script is based on Ville Vuorela's autobiographical book "The Problem Child Factory. The schooldays and work life of a nerd" (Published by Finnlectura, 2011, get your own copy of the book here Häirikkötehdas Finnish only).

The Book, Problem Child Factory, tells the story of the first generation of nerds in Finland. Vuorela's story is a disruptive real-life account of how the school system tries to grind down a smart, creative and inquisitive child. "I defended my right to be me", Vuorela writes, "I defended my home and my family. I defended all the future pupils who would be subjected to the teacher's tyranny". Vuorela is a renowned Finnish game author and a successful game designer.

Production status

Ongoing script development, scouting locations and starting with casting. Shootings are at Edinburgh area, at the end of July, post-production at August 2011. I got great, international people to work this piece together.

Notes from Director

I am thrilled about making the difference by putting bullying back to discussion with this short film. It hopefully works as a piece to use at schools when talking about the issue, too. I support the ideology of creative commons license and social filmmaking, let's see if I can use that in this project, too.

If you would be a bird, which one would that be? Kiwi, because it's such clumsy with big butt. It's up only at night time, can't defend self from cats, so it's really rare. I didn't manage to see these birds out in wildlife, when living at New Zealand, but could hear them. Well, I usually have a good night sleep and mostly vegetarian – Kiwi eats worms.

Best memory from school years: Let's take one from elementary school... It was a super feeling to won school's country skiing games, with better time compared to boys, too!

How did you get involved: I was looking for interesting true story based script, then I read the Ville's book when visiting him beginning of this year and thought, this could work as a film. Since documentary film wasn't an option as a graduation film, I asked if Mia could wrote a script for short drama based on this book.
